managing complexity for success

Capacity Building

Successful social and environmental management of a project relies on the implementing team having a high level of relevant knowledge and skills. Increasing staff capacity in these areas is a key contributor to project success, maintaining the company’s reputation and minimising operational risk.

We provide training in a range of environmental and social topics relevant to industrial projects and design training programs tailored to your specific needs. We empower you by transferring skills and knowledge for day-to-day social and environmental management; short and long term planning; and monitoring for all stages of project development.

Our approach

Tailored training

By building the capacity of entire workplaces and providing "train the trainer" courses, we ensure that your staff can continue to implement the capacity building program in a self-sustaining way. We also deliver specialised programs through specific training events or on-the-job training. Our training is targeted and hands-on for easy absorption by participants.

Topics include:

  • General environmental inductions
  • Understanding and meeting regulatory requirements
  • Impact assessment and analysis
  • Rehabilitation planning
  • Consultation in developing communities
  • Cultural heritage chance-find procedures
  • Cross-cultural understanding
  • Closure planning

    Our experience includes:

    Kelian Gold Mine, Indonesia

Developing and implementing training courses for local Indonesian and expatriate staff and building technical and management capacity of the environmental team. One measure of Geraldine’s success as a trainer was the subsequent promotion of local staff to senior roles, including Environmental Officer and Superintendent positions. Geraldine also trained local staff to co-ordinate, facilitate and communicate the stakeholder engagement process for mine closure.

    Xstrata Community Engagement Workshop, Australia

We provided training in Community Mapping, Stakeholder Engagement, Risk Management and Closure Planning.

    Earthwatch, Australia

We ran a workshop on “Working with Communities” to provide cross-cultural training to participants from Asia in preparation for working with Australian communities as part of an Earthwatch bird research project.

Australian Pacific Economic Forum (APEC), Australia and Indonesia

We ran workshops for APEC members on Community Dynamics and Engagement and Life of Mine Planning.

    Indigenous Consultation Guidelines

We have developed guidelines for undertaking consultation with particular ethnic groups, as well as guiding principles for community consultation which can be applied more broadly.
